Waiting For The Sun - Digital Preview

Description

Updated version of the "Waiting for the Sun Preview", which is a digitally drawn and coloured version of the fifth traditional drawing of the piece. Unlike other digital pieces, this one was drawn entirely in Photoshop; no Flash to help "fix" lines that don't quite work first time. However, I may have arguably switched one tool for something similar. I looked up a number of tutorials on "how to draw in Photoshop" and a large number recommended the "Pen" tool, which works by creating anchors, generating a line between them and then allowing you to bend it. On paper this feels nearly as "dirty" as what I was doing in Flash but on the flip side of the coin, a lot of the tutorials I saw used this on pieces that had already been drawn, as was the case in this piece. All the lines I drew, be they by hand or via the Pen tool were drawn over the traditional version, and any "fixes" I did make I aimed to do free hand instead. As a result I don't feel like I necessarily cheated, as I was purely working on lines I had drawn but I still don't feel "clean".

However, a few people (namely akeemsam, Cytoscourge and PactMaker) all recommended the program Sketchbook Pro as an alternative to Photoshop, so I have haulted progress on this version to see if I can re-draw the lines by hand with it instead and in turn learn how best to use this program.

Faults wise, I do feel the face may be off center and I'm not really happy with the hands, although this is now helped by how badly the digital lines came out. I have looked up a number of tutorials on this, and they all say you should almost slash the pen across the tablet to draw a fast but not necessarily accurate line; you can always delete and re-draw it if necessary. The hands were drawn before I discovered this method so I am aiming to fix it in Sketchbook, but I'm not sure how well it will work. I also realise the stage left hand isn't on the hip like it was in the other versions. I tried drawing it handing more casually but I'm not sure if I got it right.

As always, feedback and pointers are appreciated, but bare in mind I may not fix them as readily as I would if I were to re-draw it from scratch.

Um wow, I have to say I think this is a major improvement from ALL your other pieces. I think it has to do with the amount of detail you put into it. That's great! There's actually not much to say here since you've done everything so well O.o I'm quite impressed, really! The eyes look gorgeous btw. I think, if you want, you can add a pupil and a bit of a sparkle to it. You really really did a great job on the details man. Nice work!!

As for the face, if you think it's off center, I can tell you about a little trick I learned from LEONARDO DA VINCI himself...not personal. But still. Try to mirror your canvas or hold your drawing up against a mirror to see if it still looks the same when inverted. If it doesn't, something is wrong -- fix it! So yeah, try that! Looking forward to updates!
